Songs of Iron and Pine – Tales from Bergslagen

July 2026

This album is a musical journey through the ancient landscapes, forgotten mines, and deep forests of central Sweden. Inspired by the extraordinary history of Bergslagen, the album brings together stories of miners, charcoal burners, furnace workers, families, legends, and the mysterious forces believed to dwell within the mountains.

A note from Ken

Three years after our move from Germany to Sweden, I had finally shed my old life. The habits, the annoyances, the resentment—I had left it all behind and finally rediscovered my muse, who had been so faithful to me in earlier years when I wrote poems or songs.

Thus, the album "Ode to Svealand" gradually came into being. A collection of songs that described our new life and our new home, which we have since grown to love so incredibly much. One song—"The Fires of Långban"—is about the nearby mine and our farm. I later animated this song and showed it as
a short film before a movie screening, just for fun.

The response was so incredibly positive and grateful that I decided to develop a concept album about Bergslagen and its mining history. This is the final result, and I must say, I am incredibly proud of it. I hope you enjoy listening to it.

With deepest gratitude for this incredibly beautiful place,
Ken Wolfgangsson

  1. 1. Born Beneath The Stone 4:52 134 listens
Artwork for Born Beneath The Stone

Long before forests covered Bergslagen, fire, sea, and immense pressure shaped the rock. Continents broke apart, mountains rose, and glaciers carved the landscape anew. Far below, iron and crystals waited millions of years for the first strike of a hammer.

  2. 2. Songs Of Iron And Pine 5:22 335 listens
Artwork for Songs Of Iron And Pine

Between dark forests and glowing furnaces, a region arose whose life was shaped by the mountain. Miners, charcoal burners, farmers, women, and children carried the burden of iron together. Their names may fade from the records, but their voices live on in the songs of Bergslagen.

  3. 3. The Bergsrås Promise 6:22 23 listens
    Artwork for The Bergsrås Promise

The Bergsrå, the mysterious guardian of the mountain, grants the people iron under one condition. They may take what they need to survive, but must never violate the deepest vein through greed. When distant owners break the promise, the mountain passes judgement and the Bergsrå keeps her word.

  4. Artwork for The Fires Of The Charcoal Men

For weeks, the charcoal burners kept watch alone beside their smoking kilns deep in the forest. A change in the smoke or a crack in the earthen cover could destroy the entire harvest. While the villages slept, they kept alive the fires that fed Bergslagen’s furnaces.

  5. Artwork for Minerals Of A Hundred Colors

An ordinary grey stone breaks open and reveals a world of colour hidden inside the mountain since ancient times. Researchers carry Långban’s minerals into collections, giving them names, formulas, and classifications. Yet no scientific description can contain the wonder of seeing darkness suddenly shine like a field of stars.

  6. 6. Daughter Of The Furnace 5:38 79 listens
Artwork for Daughter Of The Furnace

She grows up beneath the red glow of the furnace and knows its whistle better than the song of birds. Behind the men of the works, women and girls hold together families, farms, and entire villages. Even after she leaves, the fire remains part of her heritage, along with the memory of those history never named.

  7. 7. Långban, Deep Below 5:59 112 listens
    Artwork for Långban, Deep Below

Beneath Lake Hyttsjön, shafts and tunnels descended deep into the mineral-rich mountain of Långban. There, the miners fought darkness, water, and the constant pressure of the rock. When the deepest level was finally reached, a hidden world remained below, filled with colours still unnamed.

  8. 8. The Last Shift At Sundown 5:09 32 listens
Artwork for The Last Shift At Sundown

On the final working day, the miners descend together one last time into the familiar depths. They leave their workplace in order, bring up the final ore, and bid farewell to the marks left by their fathers. At sunset, the last cage rises into daylight while a single lamp remains burning below.

  9. Artwork for The Mountain Keeps Its Names

Countless men descended into the mines, but only a few of their names survived in records and chronicles. Some returned at the end of their shift, while others left families waiting in vain for familiar footsteps. The mountain, however, remembers every blow, every voice, and every life entrusted to its depths.

  10. 10. When The Forest Took It Back 3:44 78 listens
Artwork for When The Forest Took It Back

After the mine closes, there is no great conquest, only a quiet return. Birches rise between the rails, birds nest beneath the roofs, and flowers open across the abandoned yards. Where iron wheels and heavy boots once shaped the ground, nature creates new life from rust, stone, and memory.

  11. Artwork for Black Water Beneath The Pines

A solitary rower crosses a dark forest lake whose shores once carried forgotten roads and working paths. Beneath moss, water, and roots lie the traces of charcoal burners, miners, and those who never returned. In the silence of night, the lake seems to carry their voices and preserve what people have forgotten.

  12. 12. The Fires Of Långban 4:49 672 listens
Artwork for The Fires Of Långban

The mines and furnaces of Långban sustained generations, while Skarpa Gård provided bread, milk, and warmth. When the work ended, the hammers fell silent and forest and moss returned to the old paths. Years later, new inhabitants bring life back to Skarpa and join their own story to the past of the place.

  13. Artwork for Än sover järnet (Still The Iron Sleeps)

The iron still sleeps beneath Långban, Nordmark, Persberg, and the other old places of Bergslagen. Yet the landscape is no longer seen only as the end of an industrial age, but as an open book of stone, ice, and time. A new generation follows the old paths and finds in them the beginning of a future that preserves the past.
